Outdoor SunSpaces News

The New Year is already under way, as is the cold and wet winter weather. If you’re looking forward to warmer sunnier days, an excellent New Year’s resolution could be to make sure you’re better placed to enjoy those days this year. One of the hottest trends in lifestyle and home improvement right now is the coming together of indoor and outdoor spaces. Verandas and patios are placed to maximise direct sunlight, enhance garden views and merge with the indoor transition area by using complementary looks and styles in furnishing and flooring. Another part of the indoors/outdoors trend is the inclusion of ‘garden rooms’ that immerse you in the scenery.

VERANDA PURPOSE AND STYLE

If you and your family enjoy relaxing outdoors, enjoying the sunshine and summer breezes but you don’t have a formal space set aside for this purpose it may be time to invest in a veranda. Not only will a veranda provide protection from rain - it will most likely increase the value of your home as well. A veranda can be constructed to flow almost seamlessly from your kitchen/dining area to maximise the living space for entertainment and dining purposes.

Verandas can be customised to reflect architectural features of your home if desired, including reflecting roof pitch and column styles. Depending on how you want to use this space, you may also want to consider enclosing one or more sides to give some protection from the weather or privacy and to allow for use all year round.

Do you just want to while away the time enjoying the garden view, listening to a little music or reading a book on a sunny day? Or do you want to take advantage of those balmy summer evenings, with the back doors flung open to the veranda and flowing into a great BBQ area where you can entertain guests? Whatever style you decide upon should be based upon a mix of purpose and budget. If you’re a handy type of person you might also consider a DIY solution with an easy to assemble veranda kit.

CREATING GARDEN ROOMS

The Victorian conservatory concept has been reinterpreted for contemporary living with the advent of ‘garden rooms’. These enclosed home extensions use large expanses of glass to provide an unimpeded view of the garden and scenic outlooks. They are often constructed using lightweight aluminium frames to keep construction costs low, while still providing a sturdy structure that aims to keep the worst of the weather at bay. Properly sited, a garden room can be a great suncatcher in the colder months, with windows and doors opened up in the warm months for easy access to the garden. They are a superb way to connect with the sights, sounds and scents of nature.

Whether you decide upon a veranda or garden room you are certain to improve both the livability and value of your home.

When you choose the structure of your garden room or veranda, you aren't relegated to a plain wooden colour anymore. You can now choose from a variety of colours, including grey, white and cream to really make it stand out. Then, you can add colour matched roof blinds, lighting and heating products to enhance the space.

When it comes to the ceiling materials, you can choose from a range of options. That includes clear polycarbonate, which allows more natural light in than some other options. Opal polycarbonate is great for allowing some light in, but also for blocking some sunlight so you can seek refuge from the sun's rays when it's too hot. Glass is also an option, one that lets in plenty of light and allows you see out of your sunshade structure. You can also choose IR clear polycarbonate, which helps repel heat so that the inside of your structure is cool, even when it's hot outside.

If you plan to spend time outdoors after dark, it makes sense to install some kind of lighting inside your garden room. LED lights are a premier option that create atmosphere and make it easy to see and which can also be controlled with a remote device.

You'll also need gutters on your structure to keep it safe from the elements and move moisture and precipitation away from your home so it doesn't damage it. The standard gutter is always a fine choice that blends with most garden room and veranda construction. However, you can also choose a round or classic design if you want to create a unique look.

If you want roof shades or blinds, you can choose from a varied selection of materials and colours to get the look you want. The blinds can cover the spaces in your structure to keep the sun out when you want to provide some shade.

Finally, heating systems enable you to enjoy your outdoor space all year round. Heaters are available in several sizes and strengths so that you can match your needs to the perfect outdoor heater.

Our beautiful Panorama Glass Rooms are modern, discreet sunrooms that can be easily opened to the sun's warmth, or protectively closed, according to the season. The back garden loses nothing, it remains an open space all summer, while the house acquires an extra room where people can relax in a garden setting, during bad weather.

Sliding walls

The secret is the sliding walls. The supporting structure is made of durable, solid aluminium, usually in grey, cream or white but any number of bespoke colours are available via special order. The sliding walls move along runners in this structure, as simply and smoothly as opening any door. Open them completely to welcome the sun's warming rays, or close them to create a barrier between you and the inclement weather. Either way, your garden view remains unobstructed. Between seasons you can gradually open/close sections as required.

Roofing

Made entirely of safety glass (apart from the aluminium support structure), these glass rooms are, to all effects, rooms, with varied heating and lighting options. Being an outside room, the roof is an important element. Our roofing materials are thick, toughened safety glass or hard, durable, glass-like polycarbonate. We also offer a range of blinds for your roof.

Installation

Glass rooms are available in all sizes, or made-to-measure, and installation is fast and hassle-free. The seasoned handy-man can even opt for the DIY version, an accompanying DVD gives full instructions.
